Free and open-source content management system WordPress launched a new plugin named EthereumAds. It allows content creators to purchase the advertising space and get Ethereum in exchange.
EthereumAds is similar to other auction-based ad systems; it regularly assigns ad space to the highest offer for two weeks. The difference is that the payments are done with Ether. WordPress already has a cryptocurrency experience. The foundation was among the first online companies to accept BTC payments in 2012. The payment option existed till 2016, then it stopped because Bitcoin fees went up. Thereafter, another cryptocurrency plugins have been introduced to WordPress, involving price tickers, payment and donation buttons. The number of those extensions reached over 300.
The new EthereumAds plugin is cooperative with separately hosted websites as well as WordPress blogs.
At the moment, the leading agent for content advertising is Google Adsense. It handles payments through traditional banking methods, which can be blocked by Google and other parties. Over the past few years, these methods have met criticism around demonetization.
On the other hand, EthereumAds is decentralized due to cryptocurrency-based payments. It aims to prevent transactions from blocking and facilitate the process of trading for advertisers and publishers.
