The Irksome Gun Culture of America
Americans own most guns per person in the world. As per the latest study, America has 120.5 firearms for every 100 residents. This alarmingly high-level of guns in the hands of people also increases the probability of people getting killed by guns. When the celebrated documentary film “Bowling for Columbine’ of Michael Moore released in the year 2002, there were nearly 10000 gun related deaths happening per year in the US. Now, almost within 2-deades, that rate is increased by 100%.
Gun murders, in particular, have climbed sharply in recent years. The 19,384 gun murders that took place in 2020 were the most since at least 1968, exceeding the previous peak of 18,253 recorded in 1993.
There were 34 school shootings in 2021, and 27 shootings so far in 2022 took place in the US clearly shows the ‘rotten state’ of domestic violence in the US.
In several states in the US, it is easier to get a gun license than a dog license. This shouldn’t happen in a civilized world. Bypassing the powerful ‘gun lobby’ like the NRA (National Rifle Association), the Biden administration has to take several effective countermeasures to reduce the gun-linked violence across America.
