Auguste Chabaud (1882-1955) attended classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon from the age of fourteen. In 1899 he moved to Paris to continue his studies. There he met some of the artists later known as the Fauves. He soon left the French capital, however, to help his parents when their vineyards were in trouble. During military service in Tunisia, from 1903 to 1906, Chabaud produced drawings of the people and the landscape. He subsequently returned to Paris where he exhibited with the Fauves in 1907. For a number of years his paintings of Parisian nightlife met with great success. Once he abandoned this theme, interest in his work gradually declined. In 1919 Chabaud returned to his native village in Provence where he concentrated on painting the countryside, the rural population and the mountains. He lived and worked there, largely in anonymity, until his death in 1955.
