Editorial: Srilanka’ s Regime Change, India should deal with caution
The victory of Sri Lanka's former wartime defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa marks the arrival of regime change in the Island nation. Immediately, Indian PM sent a congratulatory note and an invitation to visit India. Expectedly, it received widespread condemnation from the Tamil leaders. We should not forget the way the Tamils were trapped and killed in the final moments of ‘Mullivaikkal’ clash between Sri Lankan forces and Tamil Tigers. In those horrifying moments, Sri Lankan Government totally forgot the ‘Geneva Convention’. As a big nation and the so-called superpower, we witnessed the whole nonsense as a mute spectator. All these blood-stained events happened under the guidance of the same Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The Government of India should tread with caution while dealing with a person who was accused as a ‘war criminal’ by several independent media and leaders across the world. As an emerging power, we need to maintain a healthy relationship with all our neighbours. At the same time, we have to handle the utmost care while dealing with the double-crossing country like Sri Lekha who tries to appease India on the one hand and making strategic tie-ups with China secretly. It is no surprise that ‘right-winger’ like Gotabaya emerged victoriously in align with the world trend. India should follow the ‘carrot and stick’ approach with the Gotabaya. Considering his ‘questionable past,’ India should monitor the ground situation of Sri Lekha on how his Government is going to treat the ethnic minorities – Tamils.
