A study conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder has revealed just how bad AIs are at recognizing non-cisgender (transgender) people. This is a big challenge for the AI to overcome.
The worrying problems AIs have with recognizing racial minorities are becoming increasingly well-documented, but this new study is among the first to evaluate gender classifications. Normally, AIs are not designed to identify the third gender.
AI systems categorize people based on what they can “see” and often use stereotypical parameters (e.g. males don’t have long hair, females don’t have facial hair).
There are a huge number of gender categories: Facebook, for example, has around 71 options for its users. It’s perhaps asking too much to ever expect AI to exactly categorize everyone, but the researchers found concerning categorizations which have the potential to cause serious distress.
