ICIJ’s next big discovery: Mauritius Leaks
Mauritius Leaks is the latest findings of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists’ (ICIJ) award-winning offshore reporting after its fabled ‘Swiss Leaks,” ‘Panama Papers’ and ‘Paradise Papers.’ The journalists took enormous effort to unravel the truth about the secluded tax haven; Mauritus. The small island nation located near Madagascar facilitated so many high profile businessmen to route their ‘tax evaded’ money in and out of Africa. That too, when most of the small African nations are suffering, lots of the tax evaders from these nations to use Mauritius as a hub for the various kinds of money-laundering activities. Already, in India, several newspapers have published articles about money routed through Mauritius to avoid double taxation. In fact, these culprits not even paid a ‘single tax’ in one country. They smartly used the ‘Mauritius route’ to illegally park their black money.
The leak started when one of the journalists received a pen drive that contained several secret documents and that shown the origin place: Mauritus. The Mauritius leaks are the concerted efforts of 54 journalists from 18 countries. Totally, the journalists unearthed nearly 20,000 emails that reveal how the Mauritius system siphons tax from poor nations to help the rich and elites of the developed world. The Indian Express from India also joined in this investigation and published the stories associated with the Indian connection.
