The world has so many problems. The haves’ and have-nots, gender inequality, income inequality, domestic violence, drug trafficking and in this long list, we have to include the problems faced by the persons with disabilities. As we are already passed the two decades of the 21st century. Still, a good part of the world is not ‘disabled friendly.’ Building by building, street by street, village by village, town by town, state by state and nation after nation, we have to design our living and work places to be disabled friendly. On the other hand, we also have to intensify the medical research and development on how to eradicate the ‘disability’ by applying scientific methodologies. The challenge is huge. But, if the governments, corporations and NGOs focus their attention towards this cause, nothing is impossible.
The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was announced in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
UNESCO will mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a week-long programme from 25 November to 3 December 2020 under the theme: "Building back better: towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world by, for and with persons with disabilities"
Keeping the UN resolution in our mind, let us all work towards the cause of helping the persons with disabilities.
