Editorial: Epoch-making Vaccination Drive of India
India scripted a history in the world of medicine with its 1 Billion Vaccine milestone. A stupendous task of vaccinating COVID-19 to over 1 billion in less than a year, India achieved this Himalayan task. Started in 16th Jan 2021, within 10 months, to say precisely in 278 days, the nation has achieved this one billion mark. Now, India fully vaccinated its 30% of the population – that is roughly 30 crores out of the eligible population of 700 + million who have got the first dose. The aim and objective of India is to achieve the target of fully vaccinated 1 billion populations within 2021. Standing next only to China, India’s daily average is nearly 36 lakhs shots per day (roughly 3.6 million). Even adjusting to the population density, what India achieved is far superior to many developed nations. Despite its hiccups—population, geographical landscape, negative campaigning by vested interest groups, loud-mouthed Lutyens’ Media, troublesome weather, Vaccine Production and Last-mile Connectivity Limitation—India admirably administered 1 billion doses of vaccine in a short span of time. Unperturbed by the noises of naysayers, led by Narendra Modi, the steadfast BJP Government is marching towards its goal of fully vaccinating one billon citizens. This is a classic case of how to turn challenges into opportunity. Now, the world is looking India as a potential drug manufacturing hub. We hope, India will seize this chance to hold its newfound status.
