Editorial : Stop Cruelty To Animals Through Social Media
A dangerous trend is going on in the ever-pervasive social media. In a recent investigation, Lady Freethinker – A Non-profit working for Animal Welfare & A Kinder World exposed more than 2,000 videos on YouTube of animals abused for pure amusement. Fake "rescue" videos were among the most insidious offenders: YouTubers are putting small, helpless animals in the grasp of predators, intervening at the last minute to "save" the animals. There is no public flagging or no internal monitoring committee actively doing the ’fact-checking’ the cruelty to animal acts. Eventually, these videos also receive a huge hit and sizeable revenue to the content creators. YouTube should act immediately and set up an internal ‘monitoring committee’ to curb these kinds of videos. Otherwise, it’s very difficult to nab the culprits who used to upload content from any part of the world. Though, we quoted only YouTube, but these kinds of videos are widely circulated across all popular social media platforms. Most of these videos are grossly violating the community guidelines of the respective platform. Still, the number of videos and its viewership are on the rise. The social media should act responsibly and remove these kinds of disturbing videos.
