On 2nd October I had an opportunity to watch JOKER on screen. Directed by Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) , it is undoubtedly one of the best movies of our generation.
Before I further discuss more about this movie , I would like to point out few things about this character.
The infamous Joker character first appeared in Batman #1 (issue 1) debuted in the year 1940 , since then the clown prince of crime has been number 1 nemesis of Batman. All rights of this character is legally reserved with Detective Comics (DC). In comics Joker has highest body count among all infamous villains making him the most feared. Even though he doesn't have any meta-powers (super human abilities) , he has an in depth knowledge in chemistry & equally insane metal health!
Some notable comics are "The joker's five way revenge" (Batman #251) , " The laughing fish" (Batman #475 & #476) , "The Dark Knight returns" , "Batman : The killing joke" etc.
Now returning to the subject , this movie mainly focuses on negativities that our society has in it , and how these factors affect a mentally unstable person. The movie is shot in setting of 90's Gotham city, during the time when Thomas Wayne is running campaign for mayor. Robert De Niro's has exceptionally well portrayed his character Murray Franklin , a talk show host who plays an important role in Arthur's (joker) life.
The entire story is seen with respect to Arthur Fleck (joker) , the cinematography & background music undeniably satisfying.
I must admit that it was an wonderful experience to watch this drama/thriller. One should not expect to witness the normal adrenaline filled fight scenes shown in usual superhero movies , as this movie's main focus is delusional & narcissistic behavior of the protagonist. Every actor has done their best as supporting cast , but Joaquin Phoenix & Robert De Niro will leave an impression on you . Especially Joaquin has dedicated himself for the character & has physically deformed his body.
Todd Phillips who has directed movies like Hangover has surprised everyone with this masterpiece. This is one such movie that deserves an Oscar!
